International Day of the World`s Indigenous Peoples 2025: Observing this day across the country

There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6 per cent of the world’s population, but account for at least 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.

In order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.

On the other hand, there are more than 50 Indigenous Peoples living in Bangladesh. Likewise, the indigenous peoples around the world, the Indigenous Peoples in Bangladesh is also going to observe the day through various initiatives and programs in different parts of the country.

This year the theme of the international day of the world’s indigenous peoples 2025 is Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures.

With the initiative of Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum and the international indigenous day celebration committee 2025, the day will be observed in Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban, Dhaka, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Noagaon, Moulvibazar, Tangail Chittagong and in different indigenous inhabited upazilas and districts in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Garo Students Union will organize  a candle light event at Shaheed Chattar, Jagannath Hall, Dhaka University.

Indigenous Artist Unity will organize a day-long program Indigenous Film screening, Photo Exhibition and Discussion Session at Sanskriti Bikash Khendra, Paribag, Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum will organise a daylong discussion meeting. cultural program and Grand rally at Central Shaheed Minar, Dhaka University, Dhaka.

The international indigenous day celebration committee 2025 will organise a Mass Gathering  and rally at Rangamati.

The Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum, Moulvibazar Branch will organize a Discussion meeting, Rally and Cultural programme at Shilpakala Academy, Moulvibazar.

The Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum, Chittagong Branch will organize a Discussion meeting, Rally and Cultural programme at Buddhamandir Chattar, NandanKanan, Chittagong.

The international indigenous day celebration committee 2025 will organise a rally, massgathering and cultural event at Khagrachari Sadar.

Jatiya Adivasi Parishad will organise rallies and Mass Gathering at different districts of Rangpur and Rajshahi division.

Jayenshahi Adivasi Unnayon Parishad(JAUP) will organize a Discussion meeting and Cultural program at Madhupur, Tangail.
